5 Risks You Must Know

Tokenized stocks are new and exciting. But the risks are real. Custody collapse, regulatory bans, tech failures, liquidity drying up. Here is what could go wrong and how to stay safe.

#1 Custody Default Risk

The custodian (holding real SpaceX shares) could default. If Fidelity (current SPCX custodian) somehow collapsed and lost the shares, your SPCX tokens would become worthless overnight. Probability: Low but non-zero. Mitigation: Only use platforms with SEC-regulated custodians. Diversify across 2–3 platforms. Don't put all eggs in one custody basket. Monitor custodian health (if news breaks of financial trouble, exit immediately).

#2 Regulatory Ban Risk

US regulators (SEC, FINRA) could ban tokenized stocks as unregistered securities. Platforms could be shut down. Tokens delisted. Forced redemption at unfavorable prices. Probability: 30–40% in next 2 years. Why? Regulators want control and fees. Tokenized stocks bypass both. Mitigation: Position size small (1–3% of portfolio). Only trade tokens with highest chance of regulatory approval (SPCX, SPX). Monitor SEC announcements monthly.

#3 Smart Contract Bug Risk

Backpack or Synthetix could have code bugs. Flash loans could exploit prices. Hackers could drain liquidity pools. Your funds locked or stolen. Probability: 5–10% annually. Mitigation: Check if smart contracts are audited (reputable auditors: Certora, OpenZeppelin). Start small until platform proves 2+ years of stability. Never use new, unaudited tokenized platforms (wait 6 months).

#4 & #5: Leverage + Liquidity Risk

Leverage = if you use 10x leverage and SPCX drops 10%, you lose 100%. Avoid leverage until experienced. Liquidity = smaller tokens (non-SPCX) could have 5% spreads, trapping you. Mitigation: Use only 1x leverage. Stick to SPCX, SPX, AAPL initially. Test tiny positions on illiquid tokens before large trades. Overall: Size positions conservatively, monitor risk obsessively, exit fast if warnings appear. Tokenized stocks are opportunity + risk = size accordingly.
