Crypto scams stole ₹2,000+ crore from Indian investors in 2025. The scams are getting more sophisticated. Here are the 5 you must recognise — before they find you.
The most devastating scam in India right now. Someone matches with you on Instagram/WhatsApp/dating app — builds a relationship over weeks. Eventually introduces "crypto investment opportunity." You deposit money — see fake profits. Deposit more. Then the "exchange" disappears. This scam has taken ₹10-50 lakh from individual victims. If anyone you met online mentions crypto investments, STOP.
Fake exchange apps look identical to CoinDCX, WazirX, or Binance. Victims deposit money and see realistic-looking portfolios. When they try to withdraw, the app "requires a fee" — or disappears. Prevention: only download from the official Google Play or App Store. Always verify the developer name. Bookmark the real website URL.
Telegram pump groups: "Inside information" on the next 100x coin → you buy → scammer sells → coin dumps. Fake giveaways: "Send 0.1 ETH, get 0.5 ETH back." (Elon Musk NEVER does this.) Fake wallet "seed phrase recovery" sites: scammers set up sites pretending to help with wallet recovery — they steal the seed phrase. No legitimate service needs your seed phrase.
Scam #5: "Crypto tax refund" government impersonators — "Your crypto TDS refund of ₹28,000 is pending — pay ₹5,000 processing fee." The Indian government does NOT contact you via WhatsApp for tax refunds. Golden rules: Nobody legitimate DMs you about crypto. If it sounds too good to be true, it IS a scam. When in doubt, call CoinDCX official support directly.
